Auction Values For All Three ottoneu Formats

Every year, there are dozens (if not hundreds) of articles, blog posts, magazines and more offering up auction values for fantasy baseball. And almost all of these fit a fairly specific set of rules – rosters in the mid-20’s, budgets in the mid-$200’s, traditional 5×5 stats. ottoneu, however, lives in a different universe and plays by its own rules. We scoff at your tiny rosters and insignificant budgets! We do not settle for your traditional 5×5 roto scoring!*

So often, I am asked how to translate a $31 Justin Verlander or a $37 Miguel Cabrera (their actual values in 2012, according to the system devised by Zach Sanders) into a fair price in ottoneu. This is an issue I struggle with every season, particularly as we start talking about the second or third seasons of a league where more than half the dollars and roster spots are often taken up before the auction.

Instead of trying to come up with a magic formula that can address any player in any league, I conducted my valuations based on a new league — 12 new teams, everyone is available, $400 per team available to be spent to fill 40 roster spots — and used those prices as a floor for the value on players in future years.**

The article below goes through my methodology for determining the auction value of each player in all three ottoneu formats (with a particular focus on the ottoneu FanGraphs Points scoring system, the linear-weights-based setup which is the most popular). I’ll also link to a ranking for 2013 based on the work in the article.

Setting Your Production Projections
The first and most important step is to set good projections for the coming season. As with any mathematic model, if you put garbage in, you get garbage out. You can have the world’s most precise method for valuing production, but if you project production poorly, you will have incredibly precise values on meaningless statistics.

For the purposes of this article, I am going to work with the Bill James Handbook Projections from Baseball Info Solutions, which appear on every players FanGraphs page. This makes for a simple system. In my own rankings, I typically use a combination of multiple projection systems, mixing in Bill James, ZiPS, PECOTA, and OLIVER, with the exact mix changing from year-to-year. The reason for the mix is that it balances out any odd spikes or valleys in any of the systems. If ZiPS expects a given player to have a huge breakout, I don’t want to value that player only on that projection — I want to temper that expectation with what the other systems say. If they all say to expect a breakout, so be it.

I also go through and make some edits of my own to the projections. Maybe I think the systems are not accounting for a nagging injury that held a guy down last year. Maybe the system doesn’t realize that Stephen Strasburg only threw 159.1 innings last year because the Nationals shut him down, and a nice-sized increase is to be expected. I make edits sparingly — I am fairly confident the computers are smarter than me — but I do make them.

For these rankings, I will leave my opinion out of it. As of press time, Bill James Projections are the only ones available, so that is where we start.

The one caveat to this is that these the Bill James projections do not include Holds. To avoid drastically undervaluing non-closing-RP, I used the past few years of results to create an equation based on Appearances, K% and BB% to determine a projected number of holds. The problem with this is that it overrated the number of holds for a good chunk of pitchers, so I used the equation to find the projected hold leaders and then force-fit those leaders to a scale that fits what has happened the past few years. This is FAR from exact. My guess is that the projections worked out fine for the top RP, but after you get outside the top 20 closers and top 20 other relievers, things are much more volatile.

Creating Raw Scores
For ottoneu Classic (4×4) and Old School (5×5), I use Zach Sanders’s ranking system to set the raw scores for the players. Those four articles will provide the details on how those systems work.

For FanGraphs Points leagues, the raw score is actually rather straight-forward – take the projected stats and see how many points that player would have scored. Simple, right? If a hitter is going to get 550 AB with 150 H, 30 2B, 10 3B, 25 HR, 75 BB, 5 HBP, 10 SB and 5 CS, he would score the following points:

Stat Scoring Total Points
AB -1 -550
H 5.6 840
2B 2.9 87
3B 5.7 57
HR 9.4 235
BB 3 225
HBP 3 15
SB 1.9 19
CS -2.8 -14
Total 914

On the other side of the ball, a pitcher with 200 IP, 180 K, 170 H, 70 BB, 10 HBP, 20 HRA and no relief appearances would score the following:

Stat Scoring Total Points
IP 7.4 1480
K 2 360
H -2.6 -442
BB -3 -210
HBP -3 -30
HRA -12.3 -246
Total 912

Once you have that calculation, you should now have every hitter and every pitcher and their projected scores. You could, theoretically, stop here. You would have a ranking of every player regardless of position and playing time. You would know, for example, that Miguel Cabrera projects to 1303.1 points, Troy Tulowitzki to 947 points and David Ortiz to 1041.7 points. You would not, however, know if Tulo’s 947 is worth more at SS than Ortiz’s 1041.7 at 1B or how much of a difference it makes that Cabrera projects to use up more games (meaning Tulo and Ortiz leave you more space to earn additional points from a backup).

Why do these things matter? Well, the first is pretty straight-forward. If the average 1B is going to score 1100 points and the average SS will score 600 points, you probably prefer Tulo to Ortiz since Ortiz is actually a below average player for his position, despite scoring more total.

The second is a bit more confusing. In roto leagues, where rate stats come into play, using a backup hurts more than it helps. If Tulo has to sit out 40 games, and you use a reserve for those games, you will hurt your OBP, AVG, SLG or any other rate stat being used. Sure, you might pick up a couple runs or home runs here or there, but the net value isn’t that high. In FanGraphs Points leagues, however, even a replacement level player earns positive points in an average game.*** This means that if Tulo gets you 947 in 122 games and you can get three points per game from a backup, you will get 120 additional points out of your SS position, taking you to a total of 1067 – more than you would get from Ortiz.

Looking at the impact of playing time and positions is where we go next.

Assigning Positions
Later in the process, we are going to score each player relative to replacement level and, naturally, replacement level varies by position. In ottoneu, as in many formats, players are eligible for multiple positions, but for overall rankings and dollar values, they can only be valued at one position (otherwise they would have different values at different positions) and so I assume each player will be used at the weakest position they qualify for.

To define “weakest position,” I look at points provided by the last starter at each position, while ignoring MI, Util and the fourth and fifth OF slots. So basically, how many points would you get from the 12th-best C, 1B, 2B, 3B, and SS, and from the 36th-best OF. The results are not surprising — C, SS and 2B are the weakest positions, in that order, while 1B is the strongest. OF and 3B are very close (803 from the 12th best 3B and 806 from the 36th best OF). In this case, it turns out the replacement level OF is lower than the replacement level 3B and, as a result, I assume a 3B/OF eligible player will be used primarily in the OF. In reality, the difference is rather minor, and you could easily go either way.

Based on this ranking — 1B, 3B, OF, 2B, SS, C — I assign each player a “primary position.” Anyone who can play C, will play C. Anyone left who can play SS, will play SS. And so on.

PAR – Points Above Replacement
On FanGraphs, when we value players, we typically use WAR — Wins Above Replacement — because the value a player provides is not relative to zero, but to the production you would get from a random waiver wire acquisition used to replace that player. The same is true in ottoneu.

For 4×4 and 5×5 leagues, I continue to use Zach Sanders’s approach to replacement-leveling, with one change, I use a different number of players for each position than he does (as outlined below).

Rather than look at pure points, I look at how many points a player would earn above a replacement level player that could be picked up for a dollar at any time. The first step to this is finding a “replacement level” for each position. But to do that, you need to know how many players at each position will be owned. Should the replacement level 3B be the 13th 3B? The 15th? The 33rd? Based on an analysis of a handful of leagues, plus a consideration of what set of players will create the most points possible for the league as a whole, I came up with these numbers:

Position Players
C 35
1B 27
2B 30
SS 32
3B 18
OF 84
SP 108
RP 73
Total 407

These results make logical sense to me – you start a C, two 1B (one at util), 3 MI, 1 3B, and 5 OF , leaving your bench with about 2 catchers, 2 MI, 2 OF and maybe a 3B. Then you have 9 SP to fill up your innings and 6 RP – one for each slot plus a backup. This also leaves six roster spots unaccounted for – to be filled by replacement level guys, prospects, etc.

I consider replacement level per-PA: I consider what you could get if you kept working the waivers or kept a couple reserves on your bench to fill a need. I filter the spreadsheet by “primary position” and sort by Pts/PA so, for example, I look at only SS , with Tulowitzki at the top (1.537 Pts/PA) and Jose Iglesias at the bottom (.640 Pts/PA). Assuming 32 SS are owned, as noted above, the replacement level for SS is 1.032 Pts/PA.

To calculate Points Above Replacement (PAR), I take each player’s total points and subtract the replacement level for their position multiplied by projected PA. So, again using Tulo:

947 Pts – (1.032 Pts/PA * 616 PA) = 311.3 PAR

This is telling you that if you used Tulo all season, and supplemented him with a replacement level player to fill out the position, you would end up with 311 more points than using the replacement level player all year. The way this accounts for position is pretty clear. It accounts for playing time by saying another SS who put up 674 points in 350 PA would actually be worth MORE than Tulo – that player puts up 312.8 points above replacement. Over the course of, for example 700 PA, Tulo+Replacement = 1033.7 Pts, while our Half-Season Phenom+Replacement = 1035.2.

For pitchers, you do the same calculation, but using IP instead of PA. For Justin Verlander, your equation would be:

1213.7 Pts – (3.913 Pts/IP *231 IP) = 309.8 PAR

As with Tulo, you now know that if you used Verlander as much as possible and filled out innings with a replacement level pitcher, you would end up with 309.8 more points than using a replacement level pitcher all year. And if you calculate their respective values in dollars (which we will do shortly), you will find that since they produce close to the same number of points (310 vs. 311) they have close to the same value ($35.13 vs. $35.30).

Assigning Auction Values
This is where I bring back in the 4×4 and 5×5 threads, as I have a different method of assigning auction dollars than Zach Sanders uses for his rankings.****

Roto Leagues (4×4 and 5×5)
For these leagues, you sum up the Sanders’s FVARz for every player whose FVARz is greater than 0, and then divide the total by the number of dollars you expect to be spent on production at auction. Why emphasize production? Of the $400 per team that can be spent at auction, some will be left aside for in-season moves, some will be spent on prospects or flyers, and some will be spent on replacement level players – basically roster fodder. For my projections, I assume the following :

1) Each team will use 33 roster spots on players they hope have value, which gives us 396 roster spots to be productively filled
2) Each team will have 5 prospects, at an average price of $3 on their roster
3) Each team will have two flyers priced at $1 each on their roster
4) Each team will end the auction with $8 in cap space remaining

This means that filling those 33 productive roster spots will take up $375 per team, making a total of $4500 available at auction.

So, looking at 4×4 and using the Bill James Projections, there is a total of 1095.79 FVARz available to be bought at auction and a total of $4500 to spend, meaning that, on average, each point of FVARz will be worth approximately $4.11.

By multiplying each player’s FVARz by that dollar figure, you get an auction value for the player. Again using Tulo and Verlander, you get:

Tulowitzki: 9.13 FVARz * ($4500 / 1095.97 FVARz) = $37.48
Verlander: 8.87 FVARz * ($4500 / 1095.97 FVARz) = $36.57

In 5×5 leagues, where there is more FVARz available (each player has a higher score, thanks to the presence of a fifth category), the price multiplier is lower ($3.02 per FVARz) and both players actually lose some value, with Tulo coming in at $24.91 and Verlander at $33.94.*****

Points Leagues
For points leagues, you effectively do the same thing. Using all the same assumptions about roster make up as I used above, you get $4500 to spend, but this time you are buying 39,680 PAR (rather than 1095.79 FVARz in 4×4 leagues). This gives you a price multiplier of about $0.113. Once you have that, you do the same calculation for each player – take their score, multiply it by the multiplier. Same two players:

Tulowitzki: 311.3 PAR * ($4500 / 39680 PAR) = $35.30
Verlander: 309.8 PAR * ($4500 / 39680 PAR) = $35.13

Inflation
This is where ottoneu auction values really vary. Every year, owners hit on a few gems. Actually, more than a few. Teams enter the auction having held onto as many as 38 players (yes, I have seen that), and almost everyone keeps 15 or more.

If we assume that owners keep 20 players on average (I actually think this is low, but it makes for easy math) and that those players are almost all “productive” players (also not always true, as many prospects are kept, as well), that is 240 of the anticipated 396 productive players who are no longer available in the auction. On top of that, the fact that the owners kept these players means that they should be paid less than (or at least not more than) their value.

This means that there are fewer PAR (or less FVARz) available in to buy and fewer dollars available to spend but number of dollars has gone up relative to PAR. Here’s a mini example to help illustrate:

Let’s assume there are ten exactly identical players in the player pool and $100 to be spent. Each player’s value is $10, since they are identical and there is, on average, $10 per player to be spent. Now let’s assume that five of the players are already owned for $5 each. Suddenly there are only five players to be bought, but still $75 to be spent, so those players are now worth $15 each.

The math is basically the same for an ottoneu league, but writ large. So what that means is that the values created above are accurate for a first year league, only. After that, the multiplier has to change to account for the decrease in available talent.

The way I have accounted for this is to sum up the total salaries and PAR or FVARz for every KEPT player and deduct those numbers from the dollars to be spent and the points available to be bought. Since we are doing this early in the off-season, before we know what other owners will do, I assume every owner will a) use the same ranking system I do and b) act rationally. And from there, it’s just a matter of iterating.

The impact of this differs based on league, since player salaries differ based on leagues. As an example, I’ll calculate inflation for the FanGraphs Staff League #2, a linear weights points league I play in.

For this league, if you count up every player whose 2013 salary is lower than the projection we already came up with, you get 135 players being kept, accounting for 18,338 PAR and $1,289. When you subtract those from the 37,872 and $4,500 we started with, you get a new price multiplier of about .150, instead of .113. Once you apply that multiplier to the projected values, you get 48 more players that should be kept (because everyone’s values just went up, but their 2013 salaries did not). After you re-do those changes three more times (taking out new kept players, finding a new multiplier, re-setting values, taking out new kept players, etc.) you end up with 191 players being kept and a price multiplier of .159.

In practical terms, this means that our $35.30 Tulowitzki would be worth $49.43 at auction. Verlander is $49.19.

You can do the same thing for any league – count up PAR or FVARz kept and dollars kept, subtract those from PAR or FVARz available and dollars available and find a new multiplier.

Auction Values Table

Below is a single table with nine total values for each player. Based on the Bill James Projections, I have a 5×5 FVARz, 4×4 FVARz and linear weights PAR for each player, their respective “new league” auction value and their “inflation” auction value based on a sample league for each format (here are the specific 5×5, 4×4, and points leagues used). Keep in mind that these inflation values are a) league-specific and b) probably a bit on the high side, as they assume perfectly rational decision making. These values were also calculated before the January 31, 2013 cuts could be figured in.

*Unless you pick the “Old School” scoring option and use 5×5 stats. Then we are totally cool with it.
** Assuming owners act rationally, the players they keep will provide more value than their price, meaning that, relatively speaking, there is less value to be bought and more money to be spent on the players remaining at the auction, hence the inflation you see in subsequent years in ottoneu leagues – the value out there at auction is more scarce and therefore more valuable than it was a year earlier.
***The lowest rated player on a points-per-PA basis in these rankings is Drew Butera, who projects to score about .5 pts/PA.
****My auction value projections tend to account for more dollars being spent in the auction and for higher peak prices. I find this to be more representative of ottoneu leagues, however if you would prefer to use Zach’s system, I will not be hurt. They will work well, too, although you would likely end up with fewer “stars” and more “values.”
*****The lower value does not reflect Verlander or Tulo being worse players in that format. Instead, there is an change in the overall landscape of the league. Verlander will not accrue saves (unless the Tigers do something crazy!) and so his value relative to, for example, Craig Kimbrel, has to come down. Similarly, players like Juan Pierre see a sudden boost in value when you account for SB. Higher prices on speedsters and closers will flatten the entire price curve and bring down the relative value of guys like Tulo and Verlander.

Great work Chad, this is similar to the work I put into player evaluations. A question I have been pondering recently is how you evaluate players when you are in year 2 or 3 of an Ottoneu league. The player pool is much smaller in these cases, my gut says this will inflate the value of the available players but have not decided on the best way to evaluate available talent.

Of course I may be over thinking it, and player value should not change based on the available talent pool.

Nice article Chad. It would be interesting to evaluate how the values have historically changed as Ottoneu leagues age from year to year as the stats we can measure and predict in the player pool decreases at auction time.

Excellent article! This saves me a whole bunch of work, and thinking 🙂

Why make adjustments based on points per plate appearance, not points per game? When owners make lineup decisions they’re spending a game on a player, not five plate appearances.

@Demingas – I think what you are getting at is what I call inflation in the article, the idea that the scarcity of players available due to so many players being kept results in a higher price for production at the auction. I think this is very real and definitely impacts prices. In my grid at the end of the article, I have given both base and inflated prices for each format, with the inflated prices being based on specific leagues (meaning they may differ for your leagues). But that gives you a sense of where the prices could go.

@chrisb – I use Pt/PA rather than Pt/G because Pt/G can be hurt (or helped) by a player only playing full games vs. occasionally playing part of a game. For example, let’s say you have two OF on your team and you can only start one of them today. Here are sample stats:

    OF A – 100 pts, 20 G, 100 PA
    OF B – 100 pts, 25 G, 80 PA

Player A has played 20 games and started them all, accruing 5 pt/G and 1 pt/PA. Player B has played 25 games, but some of them he was a pinch hitter (or defensive replacement or something), so he is at only 4 pt/G but 1.25 pt/PA. If you expect them both to play a full game on that day, OF B seems to be the better option, even though he looks worse on a per game basis.

Of course there are other factors – maybe B is a platoon guy and is only going to get 3 PA tonight, while A will get 5. But more often than not, I’ll use the guy who is better on the /PA basis when he starts.

In the valuations, I don’t want to punish players who may get some PH opportunities which skew their pt/G, nor do I want to overly reward players for playing full games every time they play. Using Pts/PA protects the former and still allows guys who play a ton or get a lot of PA to benefit, as their PAR will include a greater number of plate appearances, total.

Great work. Small problem: the tables seem to be sorting by the absolute value of the numbers, rather than the numbers themselves. So -22.00 comes right after +22.01. Fixable?

@Byron – yeah, that is odd. Looking into it.

  9. revsjones says:

I notice that your 4×4 values have the highest inflation – about 49% (compared to 40% for points and 37% for 5×5). Is this mostly a reflection of the fact that the league chosen for the 4×4 calculations was “original ottoneu”, which presumably has been around longer than any of the other leagues? I’m assuming that older leagues will have slightly more inflated values?

  10. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@revsjones – nice catch. I think your analysis is spot on. We’re in year 8, I think. Pts is in year 2, 5×5 is in year 3. My guess is there is a plateau after a few years (I’d guess the original league has reached it) but until then, yes, I think inflation increases year over year.

  11. Chok says:

Catchers are very tricky to value. While 35 or so may be owned, the bulk of the playing time goes to the top 12 or so and, the “replacement” level for investment’s sake should probably be set near the 15th best rather than the 35th best. Unlike a position like OF or 1B, if you own a $35 catcher, there is no reason to purchase another $20+ catcher–it simply will not benefit your team–slotting that guy at Util will degrade his contribution dramatically, perhaps beyond zero, and you only get 162 games at C. Managers scoop up the best 12 or so catchers fairly quickly and are concerned about, but do not invest heavily in, backup catchers who may only “start” 30 of the games (a contribution worth maybe a quarter of their value as you have it). If a manager lets the best 11 fall, the chances are he/she will not have much competition when it comes to bidding on the #12 guy and will probably be able to pick up several of the guys in your $12 range for $3 apiece. Because you have put the “replacement” level so very, very low for catchers, you over-value, I believe, mid-level catchers’ contributions. Your top 12 guys total $213 or so, which seems reasonable if a bit hopeful. Your next 12 guys all together are coming in at $84 total, which is way too high based on a real league’s dynamics. And your third tier guys are coming in at $25 total (minimum investment of $1), which is also too high–this should be much closer to the minimum of $12.

Another interesting dynamic here is the Ryan Doumit effect–a guy who pinch hits a lot in games where he doesn’t start, and spoils the P/PA vs P/G correlation; if you spot-started him on the days he actually started last year, you got a lot more than a $7 value out of him.

You might also want to use $360 per team instead of $400; $40 is just for roster slots, and have $1 + value overall.

@chok – I think you may be onto something with the catchers. I need to look at it a little closer but if I do a refresh on this I’ll see if another approach for catchers makes sense.

As for the dollar figures, I used $375 rather than $400, to account for people leaving free agent cash available and paying for prospects and such. Think going down to $360 would be too low.

@pillsbury – definitely agree on Gyorko. The Bill James Projections are very high on him and that is what is driving the values.

  15. Chok says:

@Chad, I was trying (somewhat unsuccessfully) to articulate how it’s not really possible to have a sub-$1 player in OttoNeu. Each roster slot takes up a dollar, so $480 of league money (more than a team’s worth of money) is basically just assigned to the roster slots. The players worth drafting are worth $1 plus what portion of the remaining $4,320 they deserve.

  16. PillsburyFlowboy says:

thanks for the reply, chad. do you know where i can find those gyorko projections? they don’t appear on his fangraphs player page. are some of the bill james projections unpublished?

  17. etrain says:

My question is about lower-tier OFers like Gardner, Boesch, Brantley & Span. Of course I realize you are using just one (James’) projection system, but is it really the case that these players have negative value in FG Points format? Given the roster demands 5 starting OFers plus UT and probably 10 or so of the Top 70ish OFers will be used at other positions, it seems odd that these players provide so little value in this format. Or am I doing it wrong?

  18. Ben says:

I don’t understand at all how you got the value of a replacement player (PTS league) for each position.

  19. Chok says:

POINTS PER GAME VS. POINTS PER PLATE APPEARANCE

Take a look at OF. Remove all the guys who have position eligibility elsewhere (except 1B) and the baseline “replacement” points per game for the best 9720 games of outfielders is around 4.5 points per game.

Now, here are two guys who averaged almost exactly 1.2 OttoNeu points per plate appearance in 2012 and whom you value almost identically in your analysis:

B.J. Upton. Will be 28 on opening day. Last year: 761 points in 146 games, 633 plate appearances. Average 5.21 points per game. 104 total year points above 4.5 Pts/G replacement level for the season. Worth about $6, $11, and $12 at 8.8 points per dollar in 2010, 2011, 2012. Bill James has his OPS going up slightly for next season (.765 with a slew of SB). 4.34 plate appearances per game. I would say Upton is worth about $13 in 2013 based on his points per GAME.

Your analysis’s verdict on Upton: $2.83. Because he gets 1.2 Pts/PA, ignoring his tendency to get a lot of PA/G.

Justin Maxwell. Will be 29 on opening day. 423 points in 124 games, 352 plate appearances. Average 3.41 points per game. -135 total year points “above” 4.5 Pts/G replacement level for the season. Worth about -$15, -$22, and -$5 at 8.8 points per dollar in 2009, 2010, 2012 (did not play in the majors in 2011). Has never gotten more than 3.5 points per game in the majors. Bill James has his OPS going up slightly for next season (to .796) but does not have his PA/G going above 3.3. Only 2.84 plate appearances per game in 2012. I would say Maxwell is worth negative $10 in 2013 and is undraftable in OttoNeu leagues based on his points per GAME.

Your analysis’s verdict on Maxwell: $3.97. Because he gets 1.2 Pts/PA.

Suffice it to say, I think using PA rather than G as your denominator is the wrong way to analyze for OttoNeu.

  20. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@chok – Maxwell only started 77 games, I believe, last year (I was looking up info on my phone, so sorry if that is wrong). I’ll try to do some better math when I can, but assuming the other games (47 of them) included on average 1 PA(probably high because in some cases he would have been a pinch runner or defensive replacement who never bats) and typical Pts/PA for him, that leaves him with 77 starts and 366.6 points, which works out to 4.76 pts per start, which is a higher score than Upton got in his starts. That situation is the exact reason why I use pts/PA instead of pts/G. Pts/G significantly deflates Maxwell’s value.

I agree that pts/PA hurts Upton a bit, too. Realistically, what I should do is give guys credit for PAR per PA up to a set number of PA (say 600 or 650) and then give them credit for all points above that, since those are effectively bonus points. That would boost the guys who get a ton of PA. The fact is, if I use Upton instead of an OF who gets 100 fewer PA, those 100 PA are pure bonus – they cannot be replaced. I’ll look into that if I do a refresh on the values once ZiPS projections are all out.

  21. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@etrain – gardner brantley and span derive a lot of value from SB and linear weights a) doesn’t value SB much and b) the value you get from SB is limited by getting CS. Boesch I think the projections are just low on. But really, I won’t be targeting any of those four at auction.

  22. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@pillsbury – the projection was in the spreadsheet I was given to do the valuations, and I don’t have it in front of me. Not sure why it isn’t on his player page. But yes, these projections are high on Gyorko and I would not be surprised to see different results if you used a different system.

Keep in mind that these valuations, as I noted in the article, are only as good as the data that you put in. For this article, I used the unedited Bill James Projections and that will result in some outliers that his projections like more than the others.

  23. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@ben – any specific question? I tried to layout the process in the article, but if something is missing, I’ll do my best to fill it in.

  24. Chok says:

If a guy is a leadoff hitter (Choo, last year, for example), he’s facing fresher pitching on average and batting with men on base less often, so his OPS goes down a bit but his PA/G goes up. Using Pts/G is a natural equalizer in this situation. I value Choo at $25 for last season because he averaged 5.91 points per game and gave a real advantage of 218.5 for the whole season. You value Choo at $7.54 because he only gets 1.34 points per PA (and had an off-year in 2011, but still).

These are really significant spreads in valuation, and I think it is much better to use the actual “capital” (G) we spend to get points, rather than an approximation that muddies the water (PA).

For Maxwell, I don’t think it’s worth a roster spot to get a righthanded platoon split who’s only going to start a third of his team’s games in order to get an extra 0.25 points per game advantage. This highlights another form of capital we have in the game (roster spots). It’s hard to see wanting to spend a $1 roster spot on a part-time guy who’s almost 30.

  25. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@chok – I think you are onto something about leadoff hitters, and I will try to come up with a better way to account for that in the next round.

However, with Maxwell, I think we have to agree to disagree. I am a big fan of using guys with strong platoon splits (L/R, H/R, whatever) in ottoneu, particularly in the OF, at C, and in MI, where there are enough spots in your lineup to maneuver guys in and out. If you grab a 6th and 7th OF based on how they perform overall, and I grab Maxwell and perhaps another high-platoon-split guy like Garrett Jones, you are a) going to pay more and b) going to get less production out of those roster spots. I’ll get more value out of two guys with heavy platoon splits than you will out of the same two guys with no splits, assuming the market values them based on overall performance (which tends to be the case). The large roster size in ottoneu allows you to manage lineups more closely, if you so choose – giving up that advantage by ignoring the Maxwell’s of the world is a mistake.

Using Pts/PA hurts Maxwell because it will factor in a number of PA against lefties, which will hurt his rates but which as an owner you would never use. It helps him by not punishing him for one PA or running appearance or whatever in a game that he doesn’t really play in. I think the balance is pretty close on guys like him.

Ideally, I’d find a way to get projections based on games started, not based on G or PA, since the real question is “how many points will this player get me in any given game that he starts?” but that is not feasible based on the projections (it can be done in retrospect, and probably should). In the meantime, if you want to use Pts/G, you should. It will likely lead you to undervalue part-time players and miss out on some great values. On the other hand, I am probably downplaying the role of lineup spot in my points leagues rankings. I am going to look for a way to fix this.

  26. Chok says:

@Chad, this is an interesting conversation, and thank you for responding.

I have played the OttoNeu points game for two years now, and ran a similar points system on Yahoo for about six years before that. I was thrilled when OttoNeu came around because it does a really good job with a really good points system *and* makes it a keeper league.

One thing I notice about splits and platoons is this: even my left-handed platoon splits who play 2/3 or 3/4 of their teams’ games seem to *always* end up facing lefties on the same day (then I miss a game). Having a guy not start for your team is a big deal. There are more than 162 days in the baseball season, and it’s often possible to pick up a game or so on a Monday or Thursday or something, but almost no one in my league got to 810 OF games used. Having a bench guy who is going to get you an extra 0.25 points above replacement for a third of your games is an *expensive* way to use a roster slot.

I think of it this way: if one of your big bat starters has to miss a game, there is only a 40% chance that Maxwell will be able to fill in that day. So he might get 4.75 points (40% chance), but he also might get zero points (60% chance). Average effect, 1.9 points for that game. Miss two games in the entire season and you’re down 9 points you could have gotten.

You value points at 8.8 per dollar in the Fangraphs points system, which is about the same as I have it, and having a righty platoon bench guy on your squad is maybe costing you a dollar just from missed games.

This is a deployment issue, and it makes the roster spots valuable. Yes, we have 40 roster slots, and 18 of those are bench slots, but how easy is it to get to 1500 innings with 5 starters and 5 relievers? Okay, so, 16 bench slots. And you have to back up every position reasonably with a regular player in case of injury (C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, OF, SP, SP, RP, RP). Okay, so 5 free slots. And maybe you want a stud prospect or two and you’re holding a $2 Victor Martinez or something… so 3 or 4 spots are left for high stakes gambling. If you want to win you should deploy near 162 games at each position. I want those 3 or 4 finesse spots to be young stud workhorse players with upside, not a nearly-30 righty platoon split who plays a lot of games on the west coast (Pacific Time) and will be harder to fill in for if he’s suddenly not in the lineup because of the lateness of games. I’m sure Justin Maxwell is a great guy and extremely valuable to his MLB team, but OttoNeu is not 25×30 (750) players it’s 12×40 (480) and consistent, reliable roster spots are at more of a premium.

That’s my two cents. (Rounding up to the nearest dollar because it takes up a roster spot so, $1.)

  27. Chok says:

p.s., I think it is great that Niv fixed the SP/RP exploit because that was an almost mandatory “finesse” player money/roster-slot sink. Now we can do things like platoons and pitcher splits more often, which is extra-fun.

  28. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@chok – also enjoying the conversation. I love fantasy baseball and the unique peculiarities of ottoneu are among my favorite topics. And platoons are one of the most interesting.

I can definitely understand your thoughts on this, and I think a lot of others agree, which is why I feel I can typically make a tidy profit using platoon players. For my roster, I typically expect to carry roughly the following:

    2 C
    2 1B
    2 SS
    2 2B
    2 3B
    8 OF
    8 SP
    5 RP

That accounts for 31 roster spots, leaving me 9 additional spots to play around. And that does not include the fact that sometimes that 31 slots can be even fewer. The last couple years, my back up 3B was Bautista (I started Zimmerman) the original league, which meant that my 6th OF was effectively my extra 3B as well, opening up another free spot.

If I can use one of those bench OF spots and maybe one or two other spots on guys with heavy platoon splits, I can gain quite a boost. The thing is, Maxwell vs. lefites or Fowler at home, or any number of heavy platoon split guys aren’t worth only .25 points per game more than their potential replacement – they play at an almost all-star level in those games. Maxwell put up a .385 wOBA vs. lefites last year over 57 games. I imagine this year it will be more games. For those games, I am not only waiting for someone to have an off day, I am actually benching my last OF to start Maxwell instead.

If you are telling me that for $3 or $4 at most, I can grab a guy who for 57 games will match Josh Hamilton’s production (.387 wOBA last year) and outperform Matt Holliday (.378), well I will very happily use up a roster spot to platoon him in my 5th OF slot. Desmond Jennings was the 50th highest wOBA among qualified OF last year at .309. If I have him as my #4 or #5 OF and can replace a third of his games with Maxwell – I have just given my team a HUGE boost.

  29. Chok says:

Why hold only 5 RP? RP get about 6.8 points per inning above replacement level in Fangraphs points (note: not SABR points). SP get about 3.85 points per inning. If you hold more relievers, you can play more high impact innings. There are lots of opportunities to grab extra reliever innings, whether it’s days your A-team guy’s team isn’t playing, days he’s just thrown 45 pitches over the last two days, days the A team is throwing a AAA guy while the opponent has King Felix… (little chance for a save or hold), dozens of opportunities a year to slot a guy who has a 35% chance or so of getting you an extra 3 points. Every such opportunity is worth about a point above replacement SP innings. I usually carry 7 or 8 relievers and cycle different players in throughout the season as other guys get hot. This sort of “micromanagement” is fairly easy (daily), since you don’t have to watch lineups being posted.

I am slowly starting to come around to your Maxwell idea, but not at $4 yet. Jennings is usually playing on the east coast. Maxwell is part of the AL west this year, I think. So if you bench Jennings and then Maxwell isn’t in the lineup for some reason, you’ve lost a game. Micro-managing the lineup like this (hourly in the evenings) isn’t appealing to a lot of players. Splits will only line up perfectly if you have both guys in the same MLB team’s platoon. And, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, wOBA is not as significant as points per game; if a LHB kills righties but bats low in the order and is often taken out for a pinch-hitter when a LOOGY comes in, his OttoNeu contribution is significantly hurt. Because it’s really points per game. David Murphy is on my team, and is worth the $3 I kept him at, but he really doesn’t get a lot of plate appearances per game, and it’s trick to micromanage the lineups.

I won my league by a wide margin last year (almost 800 points) partly because I used a sabermetric attitude toward walks (811 drawn by my batters, 387 surrendered by my pitchers) but other guys had better Pts/G+Pts/IP–I just deployed better and got near the maximum in every category. That is a lot harder to do when micromanaging platoons. (Note: I also wanted to go on a vacation between April and September. 🙂

  30. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@chok – I’d typically grab another reliever or two among those 9 spots I have left. In past years, with the RP/SP thing open, I would usually have 5 RP and at least 3 RP/SP guys, as well. Haven’t quite figured out the plan for relievers this year, but likely it includes 6-8 of them, but we’ll see.

As for the east coast/west coast thing, I think this is a pretty important part of fantasy baseball and one that most people seem to not pay attention to. But for a guy who I know I am only using against certain handed pitchers, typically speaking this isn’t an issue. The Astro’s shouldn’t bench Maxwell often when he has the platoon advantage. But yes, you do have to manage that a bit.

  31. etrain says:

What about an $18 Lester in FG Points … too steep?

  32. Chad Young says:
    FanGraphs Supporting Member

@etrain – so the rankings above say his inflated value (in league #184) is just under $18. Which likely means that if you want him, you are not going to get him for much less than that. I think Lester is a decent bounceback candidate, but I am not sure the numbers justify it. His K% is on a four year decline, his HR/9 and HR/FB are on multi-year rises. He hasn’t lost much velocity, and his SwStrk% has been steady the last two years. He seems to be having a harder time finding the zone, and yes his BB% hasn’t increased. And the 1.35 increase in ERA last year dwarfs a 0.28 FIP and 0.20 xFIP increase.

So…there are good signs and bad. The upside at $18 is high and the fact is with better luck (like a higher than 67% LOB and a BABIP more in line with his career), his 2012 would have been just okay, instead of disastrous.

Personally, I think I will likely stay away from Lester this year, but I imagine $18-$22 (perhaps even a bit more) will be his going price in most leagues.

  33. Chok says:

@Chad, Maxwell only started 34 games last season against LH starters (43 against RH starters). In those 34 games, he did indeed reach Hamilton/Holliday level wOBA numbers, but he only got to 4.0 PA/G (if I’m reading the numbers right), where Hamilton and Holliday average 4.3 and 4.4 PA/G. Because Maxwell is batting lower in the order and/or being taken out late in games, his total contribution is NOT equal to those sluggers when playing in a platoon, but 90% of their contribution in points, in a world where 70% of their contribution in points is replacement level. So he is worth only worth 2/3rds of a super-slugger 1/5th of the time. I suppose you could argue that 2/15ths of $30 is $4, but it is tonnnnnns of micromanagement to get one fifth of a season out of a guy, and your 5th outfielder might very well be facing his most favorable split on a quarter of Maxwell’s starts, and your 7th outfielder might be an everyday guy who is on a hot streak one or two months, rendering the substitutions frequently a wash.

All this is to say, again, that I think your Pts/PA system *will* clarify a lot of marginal part-time players’ possible contributions, but I think that’s most practical the world of 30×25 rosters where MLB lives instead of the world of 12×40 where OttoNeu lives. I think you should work on Pts/G, which much more accurately reflects the contributions of players who overlap with the OttoNeu-useful universe (Pts/G better clarifies the contributions of everyday players who more easily justify roster slots, and it doesn’t assume that everyone is batting cleanup, which is what Pts/PA does). If you have the statistical ability to work on Pts/Start, that would be best, obviously, but that’s beyond my ken in the data.

I’m trying to calculate auction values using the Steamer projections and I’ve gotten as far as producing the raw scores for all hitters and pitchers. What I’m confused on is how you got the PAR for each position. Using the Bill James examples from the article, if Tulo’s pts/PA is 1.53, how was the 1.032 pts/PA generated? Is that the pts/PA of the 33rd SS in the Bill James projections? Since the Bill James projections aren’t listed in spreadsheet form, I don’t know who the 33rd SS would be so I can’t figure out the pts/PA for this player. I’m not following this step. Any help?
